Flat is Fun! Finally, we found a relatively flat bike route. Not that hills don't make you stronger but it is nice every now and then to get some good miles in without dying. Plus, on a tandem it much more enjoyable. We did a 50 mile ride on what is called "The Silver Comet" trail. It is a 60+ mile rails to trails route. What that means (for our non-cycling friends) is a route built where a railroad line used to be. This one is paved. The first five or so miles is a bit dicey due to a lot of people riding all types of bikes, walking, running, roller-blading and dog walking. But after avoiding the obstacles it is a pretty nice ride with very gradual inclines and descents. Nothing more than they built for a railroad. Pretty neat idea. There are a few "stations" along the way where people can park and then access the trail. It was our first time on something like that and for our first tandem ride in Georgia just what we needed. We are so out of bike riding shape.
Our tourist activity this weekend was visiting Grant Park and viewing what is called the Cyclorama. No, nothing to do with cycling. It is a huge painting and diarama done in the round depicting the battle around Atlanta during the civil war. It is the largest painting in the world, 42' high and 358'. Viewers sit on bleacher type benches on a turntable which is turned so different vignettes are watched along with a narrative explaining what one is viewing. Pretty neat. Afterwards we visited Oakland Cemetary where the author Margaret Mitchell (Gone With The Wind) is buried. A pretty old and somewhat famous cemetary. Then we had a great dinner across the street at a fun restaurant called Six Feet Under.
